The Whithorn Trust is dedicated to historical research and interpretation of the archaeological remains in our area. Our visitors enjoy discovering the history of this particular settlement in the context of the diverse landscape surrounding us. We are committed to operating in a sustainable way, reducing any harmful effects on the environment and promoting sustainability locally.
- We sell fairtrade products in the tearoom.
- We purchase local food and gifts for our shop and tearoom.
- We use recycled paper and environmentally friendly products wherever possible.
- We recycle paper, cans and glass. We also compost natural waste from our kitchen and coffee area.
- We minimise energy usage by using low energy bulbs where possible and limiting lighting according to weather conditions. We also ask visitors to help by switching off lights in some areas.
- We work with other businesses and organisations to promote the area and are developing a cluster approach to tourism.
Responsible Visitor Charter

Local bus timetables

- Shop local – we are lucky to have a wide range of shops locally. Many stock locally produced food, drink, arts and crafts. Shopping locally supports local communities.
- Reduce, Re-use, Recycle – Say no to that extra carrier bag. Local shops stock a range of ‘bags for life’ (see Whithorn Trust, Costcutters, Vickers, Stuffit, Ravenstone Deli, the Co-op in Wigtown and various bookshops).
- Respect the Scottish Outdoor Access Code – with rights come responsibilities. Be responsible for your own actions, respect the interests of others and care for the environment. Leave gates as you find them, keep dogs on a lead, avoid damaging crops and avoid littering.
- Support the Green Tourism Business Scheme and support sustainable tourism – ask at the desk for a list of members of the scheme in Dumfries and Galloway.
